Hello. My Name is Jamie and I was born in the North of England in a city named Leeds. My parents are originally from Hong Kong so I have travelled a lot throughout my life before finally coming to Japan.
I want to help students of all levels and all ages improve and enjoy learning English and I believe that everyone should be given a chance to do their best and reach their potential, and a teacher has important responsibility of also being the best they can be.
I am also a student of Japanese and other languages so I understand the challenges we face as a student and I hope we can improve ourselves by working together.
Thank you and I hope to speak to you soon!
Q) What kind of lesson are you particularly good at? Cite a concrete example.
I think I work well with less rigid conversational type lessons. In classes such as the Adults improvers class at the Oita NHK Cultural Centre, I find that I can work well in eliciting language from the students, identifying new information or amendments that can benefit the student and also knowing when to listen and allow the students to use their own abilities. Fortunately, I have a pleasant and jovial personality that usually makes students feel at ease.
However, where conversational classes can become too unstructured, I am mindful that I provide students with points about grammar, new vocabulary and interesting idiomatic features to ensure that they are learning new things.
While I was tutoring a private student for her IELTS oral test, I was careful to structure speech and discussion parts according to the test structure as well as free conversation.
Q) What do you keep in mind when teaching English to an intermediate or advanced level student?
Depending on their study history, the student may have a high expectation of themselves and the teacher and may have obtained bad habits that will be difficult to correct if the student already believes they have a good proficiency.
They may feel that they have not “learned” anything new if they don’t feel sufficiently challenged if the target learning is subtle rather than obvious, and may want to learn something new and unusual rather than reviewing and practicing what they already know.
Q) What skills could a student gain through your Skype lesson?
I would try to give the student a range of practice and learning in a skype lesson. As well as more traditional work such as free conversation, work on vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, using the text chat and audio/video functions, it would be possible for the student to practice other forms such as phone conversation English, writing skills that could be checked and corrected in real time, observation and reading from articles, videos or pre-prepared material between student and teacher via the internet or shared via the Skype file transfer system.
