I like to blog online, and talk about relevant topics. I find that people learn better if they are motivated to talk about things that interest them.
Current events always cause opinion, and ideas are driven by passion. That gives people extra incentive to pick up and remember the words they need to express themselves.
Q) What kind of lesson are you good at?
I like timed exercises. In a short or long class, people like to work fast and compete against themselves and others in small chunks timed with a stopwatch. This sets a fast pace which makes the class go faster, but also heightens the senses so learning is improved and memory is better.
Q) What do you keep in mind when teaching English to an intermediate or advanced level student?
Always be patient. People always know more than you think they do, and they may have something in the back of their mind that they do not know how to express. It is always important to be flexible and stop, to ask what the person is thinking. Free expression, and the words people learn to express their ideas are always remembered long after anything that is recited to them from a book.
Q) What skills could a student gain through your Skype lesson?
Random access of words is always helpful. People will often try to learn words and phrases in context, such as greetings, finding places, or going to a restaurant. Instead, I always use a more casual and relaxed "out of context" mix of phrases that are more easily learned.
